Through-Year Assessment: An Updated National Scan and Research Synthesis (Webinar)
December 3 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm EST

Over the past 11 years, 15 states have tried to rebuild state summative testing so that it happens during the school year, not just once at the end of the year. The appeal is straightforward: shorter tests, faster results, and information teachers might use. What has been missing is an account of whether it works, for whom, and under what conditions.
States have been asking important questions: How do we produce a defensible summative score by combining results from standardized assessments given from October through May? What supports do teachers need to use information from those within-the-year tests to inform instruction? Will districts give up their own interim assessments if a state provides a through-year program?
Through-Year Assessment: An Updated National Scan and Research Synthesis synthesizes evidence from those state programs, as of fall 2026, to begin answering some of those questions. It also describes the current landscape of state through-year programs and outline states’ experiences with through-year assessment over the last 11 years.
At our webinar on Dec. 3, from 2-3 pm ET, the co-authors will share highlights of their research. Our presenters:
- Carla Evans, associate director
- Nathan Dadey, senior associate
- Kyla McClure, postdoctoral fellow

The Brian Gong Colloquium
This annual colloquium is named in honor of Brian Gong, the Center’s Co-Founder and former Executive Director. Our aspiration for this internal event is to foster the intellectual curiosity, innovative thinking, and respectful discourse that Brian models. Our staff focuses on a topic that may be outside of their expertise but is likely to have a significant impact in our field of work. We spend one year gathering information on the topic, and we invite experts to join us for the colloquium to share information and engage in discussions.
